Here is perhaps the greatest break in Hip Hop history, Apache by Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band (who weren't even a proper band).
It all started with this, a song by Bert Weedon (written by Jerry Lordan).
Before The Shadow's decided to cover it in 1960. The song was a hit in the UK for Cliff Richards backing band, it was then covered by Jørgen Ingmann and it hit big in the U.S.
Michael Viner worked for a Record Company and had access to dead studio time (i.e. when no one was recording) and decided to invite some friends (Ringo Starr possibly???) to knock out a few tunes, thus this was born and Hip Hop had a national anthem.
Of course not every version is that great, although this has a camp, cheesy quality to it.
Im gutted, was looking forward to seeing the master of the soul sample cut ups live and fresh in my hometown but it appears that The Rza has had to cancel the tour due to "Logistical problems".
Another year older, and hopefully more wise/ another step nearer my eventual demise/ memories, like postcards, we yearn to look upon/ a chance to ponder on friends long gone/ history that has happened, we gaze to the distance/ and reach for our destiny at the futures' insistence/
Surely a sign that Hip Hop culture is aging as one by one our greats move over to another place. Mr Magic was iconic for a lot of heads as there first exposure to Hip Hop on the Radio would have been through Rap Attack.
All I can say is there must be one helluva jam going down in Heaven with these great DJ's passing away. Gutted.
This guy was inspirational as a DJ and performer. In a year where we already lost people such as MJ, Tony D and DJ AM it makes you stop and appreciate how much these people give you over their short time here. RIP.
